Companies House ID Verification

UK Companies House ID Verification
In response to new regulatory changes aimed at strengthening transparency and tackling economic crime, all individual directors and Persons with Significant Control (PSCs) in UK companies must verify their identity with Companies House. At Pro Tax Accountant, we provide a complete support service—whether guiding you through self-verification or acting as your authorised agent—to help you comply efficiently and on time.
Why Companies House ID Verification Matters
Under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, identity verification becomes mandatory from 18 November 2025 for new directors, new PSCs, and for existing directors and PSCs through a transitional period. When you successfully verify your identity, Companies House issues a personal verification code which you will need for future filings such as confirmation statements, appointments, and PSC notices.
Failure to comply can lead to rejected filings, financial penalties, and potential restrictions on your directorship. With millions of existing directors and PSCs expected to verify within a limited window, early action is essential.
Who Must Verify Their Identity
You must complete identity verification if you are:
-
A director or equivalent (managing officer) of a UK company or LLP
-
A Person with Significant Control (PSC) over a company, such as someone owning more than 25% of shares or exercising significant control
-
An individual who files on behalf of a company once that requirement extends to presenters and agents in 2026
Corporate directors and corporate PSCs are currently excluded, but this may change as regulations evolve.
When Verification Is Required
Scenario: New directors or PSCs (on or after 18 November 2025)
Deadline: Must verify before appointment or incorporation is effective
Scenario: Existing directors
Deadline: Must complete verification by the date of the company’s next confirmation statement after November 2025
Scenario: Existing PSCs who are also directors
Deadline: Must verify within 14 days of the company’s confirmation statement date
Scenario: Existing PSCs (not directors)
Deadline: Must verify within 14 days of the first of their birth month in the relevant year or as scheduled by Companies House
How the Verification Process Works
Identity verification can be completed in two main ways:
Self-verification via GOV.UK One Login
Individuals can use the official online service to verify their identity at no cost. You will need to provide approved identification such as a valid passport, UK photo driving licence, or other acceptable ID, and you may be asked to complete a short in-person check at a Post Office.
Verification through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP)
Alternatively, you can appoint a registered ACSP—such as Pro Tax Accountant—to handle the process on your behalf. You provide the required identity documents and we manage the submission, liaise with Companies House, and obtain your personal verification code.
